Technology and Role of Parents In Children’s Education | Valeem Tutor

Role of parents in the education of children has been documented in countless studies and theories. It is a fact that parents play an instrumental role in the education of children. How has the role changed however, with the advancement in technology? Has the role of parents been replaced by technology? Or has it changed to adapt to technology? To get the answers to these questions, we decided to get some insight from Valeem tutors. According to Sir Shaheer, the roles of parents differ. “Some are very careful and some are careless. There are very few parents who know how to balance that. The balance is important to make sure that the child is on the right track and is also not weighed down by the expectations of parents”. Ms. Samrah agrees that “Parents must figure out a middle ground, understand that every child is different and work accordingly.
Technology has changed every field, including education. Education now has the potential to go completely online. Ms. Tahura observes that “Parents are initially apprehensive about online education because its something new but then they gradually learn to accept it, looking at its benefits like accessibility and flexibility.” Sir Shaheer, on the other hand, feels that “Parents in Pakistan do not understand the positive use of technology. Since they do not know the positive use of technology, they do not transmit it. They do not incorporate technology into education.

The role of parents in children’s education is to some extent, also influenced by how the parents are educated. Ms. Samrah has a view that; “The education of parents plays a huge part. A child only spends a few hours in the classroom. The rest of the time, the child goes back home. A child can feel it when there is no follow-up from parents and they do not request what was studied in the classroom. It seems to the childlike parents are not interested.” Ms. Tahura also agrees, “If your parents are educated, they can motivate children with their education because they know the benefits. But times are changing. Now even parents who might not be very educated are concerned.” Sir Shaheer, however, feels that the children’s development eventually depends upon how they are brought up.
There seems to be a consensus on the fact that the role of parents cannot be undermined with the advancement of technology. They now seem to have more responsibility to ensure that their children are using technology safely. Some of that responsibility is also shared by teachers.
